Josep Enriq Balaguer

Born in 1962 in Gratallops, a small village in the heart of Priorat in Catalonia, an Autonomous Community within Spain, Europe. Lives and works in Sabadell, Barcelona.
From a young age, Josep-Enric Balaguer showed great interest in drawing. His parents encouraged his passion and knowledge in art, by taking him to many exhibitions and museums. After his high school education, Balaguer decided to specialise in technical drawing, as he thought it would provide a more reliable financial future than the profession of a painter.
In 1984, Balaguer signed up at an academy of illustration, produced drawings for cultural magazines such as “Quadern” and “Quacòmic”.
In the same year, he was involved in a serious accident at work, a life changing event which caused very serious damage to his right arm. Despite being unable to draw or paint due to his injury, he nonetheless continued to attend his drawing classes and gradually learned how to work with his left hand. Little by little and with great determination, Balaguer began to paint, thanks to the invaluable aid and encouragement of his mentor, Ricard Calvo. By 1986, his right hand arm had virtually recovered and he was able to participate his first group exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sabadell. A visitor to the exhibition, who owned an art gallery, was interested in his painting and invited him to participate in a prestigious exhibition. This subsequently led to his first one-man show in the same gallery (Cau d’Art) in Sabadell, Barcelona, in 1988. The following year, he was selected in the “Ricard Camí Prize” in Terrassa, Barcelona, which in turn led to a solo show (Subex galeria d’art) in Barcelona in 1990. This success finally encouraged him to become a full-time painter in 1991.
Balaguer is one of the New International Pictoric Realism’s artists
