Jeffrey Watts is a still life, figural, landscape and seascape oil painter with an impressionistic approach to his work. California native and son of illustrator, Robert Watts, Jeffrey has been inspired by the arts from his youth. After an injury cut short his budding career in professional cycling, Jeffrey enrolled for two years at the California Art Institute in Calabasas. The young artist spent eight months painting on location in the Caribbean, only to find his way back West to pursue a career as a freelance illustrator in Hollywood. So inspired by the work of the late Nicolai Fechin, it was in 1992, at the age of 22, that Jeffrey Watts moved to San Diego to establish the Watts Atelier of the Arts. Over the years the school has grown to over 300 students with 8 to 10 full-time faculty, including Watts, who teaches five to six classes each week while also taking classes from other instructors. Watts continues his career as a studio and plein-air painter in Southern California. He never limits his subject matter and captures anything that moves his brush to the canvas. His oil paintings have won numerous awards including First Place Portrait category and Second Place Landscape category from the Artist's Magazine, two consecutive Second Place Awards at the Salon International Exhibition, Third Place in the Raymar Fine Art Competition, a top 12 Honor Award from the Portrait Society of America, 3 Awards of Excellence from Oil Painters of America and 3 Top 100 Awards from Arts for the Parks among others. Watts has been featured in Southwest Art, American Artist, Art of the West and Western Art Collector magazines. He is a Master Signature member of the Oil Painters of America, a Signature Member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, an Artist Member of California Art Club, and holds membership in the Portrait Society of America. In 2008, Jeff participated in the prestigious Prix de West Invitational held at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. In addition his painting "Wiley Irishman" was selected as a finalist in the 2008 Portrait Society of America's Portrait Competition. Jeff was honored with a Solo Exhibition at the Taos Art Museum Fechin House in late September of 2008, while he also conducted a 3 Day Portrait Painting workshop in the original Taos Studio of his greatest influence Mr. Nicolai Fechin
